Today we received a letter from ETSA
IMPORTANT - Interruption
to Your Electricy Supply.
The details:
- Time: Thursday 26th April 2007, between 8.30am to 3.00pm
Contact ETSA Utilities on Phone 131366 (Works Order Number 300110312) for more information.
Our house is located in the Parkway Village, so you may also be
affected if you live in this area. It sounds like ETSA will be
disconnecting the high voltage-supply, and possibly doing work on the
transformers. This is good news, given that the outages that we have
had over the last two summers were caused by high-voltage
fuses overheating.
During this time, mawsonlakes.org will be unavailable, and
emails may bounce if the the outage is for longer than 2 hours (which
sounds highly likely).

It appears like a new Cafe is about to be opened in Mawson Lakes on
Garden Terrace. There are some large "Krakus Continental Cafe"
signs pained onto the shop windows.
Situated at the base of the new apartments at the north-end of the
street, this looks like a great spot to grab breakfast or a coffee
while walking to the train, or a very scarily convienient place to
stop on the way home.
Update: 5 Feb 2006 - I have been informed that there is yet
another Cafe opening up as well on Main Street. Cafe Prima is located
next to the Hotel. It looks like it is going to be very shiny.

Hot of the presses.. from the Air-Stream website:
Approval has been granted, and plans are now underway to install a
new Air-Stream node in the Mawson Lakes area. This has been made
possible through the generosity and support of UniSA and
The Mawson Centre.
The Mawson Centre will become a core Air-Stream Node and will not
only increase our networks capacity but also offer a great opportunity
to demonstrate new systems providing easy access to local information
and tools that allow anyone in and around the area to create temporary
and permanent communities in the public spaces.
This also means that there will be two core Air-Stream Nodes in
Mawson Lakes, the other one is hosted here by MawsonLakes.Org. This fantastic result
is a direct consequence of the contacts made at the
Software Freedom Showcase event, which

A bumper Chrismas edition..
The News Review - Messenger newspaper had the following articles
about Mawson Lakes
Let us guide you though your holdays: (page 3) Mawson
Lakes will comes alive in January, with Delfins's "A Month of
Fundays" Summer Festival. From January 7-26, Mawson Lakes will host
live music, childrens entertainment, fine food, an outdoor cinema, a
duck derby, fireworks and other free activities.
Councillors firm on Development Assessment Panel (DAP)
representation: (page 7) by Arron Coultate. From the story..
Salisbury councillors this week voted down a bid by council staff
to take away the right to decide all of the city's development
applications from elected members.
Cr Chad Buchanan opposed the recommendation, and instead
moved that the council form a new DAP consisting of elected members
and independent experts.
Cr Buchanan's motion was eventually carried 11:5, after a heated
debate.
Cr Gillian Aldridge told the News Review Messanger the
people of Salisbury "have the right be represented by their elected
councillors".
Cr Joe Caruso voted in favour of delegating all
development responsibilities to staff. He later said the council had
"nothing to lose" if it delegated approval responsibilities to
staff.
Northern Bid for Solar Race: (page 18) From the
article:
"Mawson Lakes is the front-runner to host the finish of the 2007
Panasonic World Solar Challenge, a 3000km event that runs from Darwin
to Adelaide.
Salisbury Council have submitted a proposal to the State
Government, with an official announcement expected to be made before
Christmas.
Salisbury mayor Tony Zappia said he was "confident" Salisbury's
bit would be successful. He said Mawson Lakes' science and
technology focus made it an ideal spot for the race finish.
The event will run from Sunday, 21 Oct to Sunday, 28 October
2007. More information can be found on the Panasonic World Solar
Challenge Website - wsc.org.au
New Road: (page 21) Construction of Elder Smith Rd,
linking Main St, Mawson Lakes with Main North Road, Parafield, has
commenced. The new 1.3km road will be constructed at a cost of $11.3
million and will complete the Mawson Connector between Main North Road
and Salisbury Highway.
Fistful of Gold: (page 31) Story by Dale Clarke about
the exceptional swimmer, Matt Cowdry, who recently competed in the
Paralympic Swimming World Championships in Durban, South Africa.
Cowdry won the 50m and 100m freestyle, the 100m butterfly and the
200m individual medley, as well as being a member of the 4x100m
medley relay team.
But after completing in his biggest meet for the summer, there is
still no rest for the 2006 Endeavour College graduate.
"I'm having a bit of a lighter load, but I;m still in the pool a
lot," Cowdrys said.
In January, he will compete in the Victorian Age State
Championships and SA's State Championships (both able-bodied
events.) "I'll just aim to swim, and maybe, maybe, qualify for the
national age," he said".
The National Age Championships are in Perth in April, and
Cowdrey's best chance for qualifying appears to be in the 50m
freestyle.
But to qualify this year would require a huge effort, with
Cowdrey's world record 26.06 sec 50m freestyle time still more than
a second behind the 25.00sec qualifying time.
Summer Days at the Boat Deck: (page 71) in the 'Out and
About' section.
Pictures of patrons at the Boatdeck: Joe and Amer Halabi, of
Salisbury East; Julie and Fletcher Haldane, of Mawson Lakes, with
Sheree McPeak, of Springbank Waters; Nick Vass, of Highbury, and
Frank Faranda, of Athelstone; Diane Matthews, of Para Hills, and
Erin Mannering, of Paralowie.
The pictures were taken by Nicholas Wrankmore.

Jack Russell Lost and Found in Mawson Lakes

from the lost-and-found dept.
On Monday the 20th December, a Jack Russell Terrier was lost in the
vicinity of Mawson Lakes. (It jumped out of a car window.) The owner
was understandably distraught, thinking that it might end up in the
wetlands.
A good samaritan in Mawson Lakes found the dog, and contacted the

much to their relief.
Knowing the dogs family, they have asked me to pass on their thanks to

Telstra Fixes A Fault

from the not-always-connected dept.
This evening (Sunday) both of my phone lines went dead. We live in
the Parkway Village area of Mawson Lakes. This is their story.
It all started at 5.30pm, when my permanent
(when-well-we-ever-be-able-to-get-broadband) modem started to
redial. After resetting it, I though the problem had gone away, as
everything seemed to be working nicely again...
Unfortunately, this was not to be. After popping out for a Chicken
and Chips take-a-way, I get beck to find that the modem had dropped
out again, and now I had lost the dial-tone on both my phone lines.
It was about 8.20pm.
Using the trusty Vodaphone mobile, I contacted the Telstra faults
number. After being kept on hold for a little bit, I was politely
informed that 'Yes' there had been a fault at the exchange earlier,
but it was marked as clear, and even though it "didn't seem like to be
the case as both my lines were effected, I would be charged $90 for a
call-out fee if it was established that I was at fault". The line was
tested and it did appear as though there was a Telstra fault.
A person from Telstra rang me back on my mobile, and said that
there was a fault in the local exchange box and that someone was
coming out to fix it... so be of a curious sort, we went out to
watch.
We watch the Telstra technician open the cabinet near out local
park. There were lots of green blinking lights, and one slowly
flashing red one. It was dark by this time, so it looked quite pretty.
He took out a small cardboard box, made a phone call, pulled
something out, pushed something in, and the slow flashing red light
turned green. We though Christmas had come..
We had tone! Instead of giving the 'Boop-Barp-Beeep' sound that we
had been getting, our home number rang again. We wandered off home
again, confident at our problems had been fixed.

Adelaide leads country in smart re-use of water: (page 33)
The article by Cara Jankin discusses some of the ways that houses in
Mawson Lakes have been fitted out to reduce the amount of water used
by householders.
The article also has a photo of resident Therese Hart-Pognotti and
her son.
This article is topical in that the new water restrictions for

operations and cease trading in its present form by the end of the
year."
The Investigator Centre and it's volunteers did an excellent job at
the recent Super Science Sunday held at Mawson Lakes, and it is a
shame to hear that this decision has been made.

On Sunday 15th October, the Mawson Centre was filled with budding
young scientists, all very keen to see the many and varied exhibits on
display.
There were native animals to see, touch an hold, computer
controlled microscopes to look at, bugs and grubs, and the giant
inflatable star dome.
The BBQ was run by the Mawson Lakes Rotary Club, and the
Investigator Science and Technology Centre provided the displays and
activities. Tenex also sponsored the event and had a display.

Software Freedom Showcase a Swinging Success

from the community-celebration dept.
This year, Saturday, September 16th was Software Freedom
Day. Mawson Lakes joined in with 194 groups around the world to hold
events in their local community to celebrate the day. The following
article was written by Janet Hawtin from Bettong.Org, one of the
community groups who participated. (For more information, see the
links at the bottom.)
Dappled sunlight in the Mawson Centre Courtyard, the Chicago
Concert band warms the eardrums with the Star Trek theme bringing a
smile to the faces of geeks, Software Freedom Day visitors and library
customers alike. The Chicago Band also put their cooking skills and
nifty 'Kransky shop in a trailer' to good use.
In the cool foyer, Annie Payne and Swing Dancers cruise through
some light hearted steps in black and white funky shoes. Some wearing
bright orange Software Freedom Day TShirts and even managing to
persuade some techie folk to dance. The Air-Stream Team with UniSA
network administrator Chris, connected two of the Mawson Centre rooms
together and networked us to some very handy internet access. The
Air-Stream team reported a steady flow of people coming to learn about
wireless networking and Adelaide's Air-Stream Network.
Air-Stream are working with Kat Jungnickel, who is a wireless
community anthropologist studying the ways that people
collaborate. Kat enjoyed the diversity of technologies and talked with
people about the culture of wireless and open source communities. Kat
adopted a pendant I had made of a CD drive component.
Mawson Lakes library reported that the only trouble with having an
open source book display was that people kept borrowing the books!
Bruce Everett set up a laptop to video display of example open
source projects including use in space projects to Mars and the cult
film 'Star Wreck in the Pirkinning', created using Linux.
The Bettong room had a banner "we make freedom" stretched across
the pin-up boards. People cruised through and got pointers on using
synaptic, browsers, changing languages in the Open Office software
suite.
Kevin showed the suite of music mixing applications he uses to mix
synthesiser music using keyboards, a computer and a digital drum
kit.
At 12, Andrew Hill was our youngest demonstrator, showing Linux on
an iPod and helping to network some of the computers. Andrew will be
moving to Auckland, New Zealand soon and we hope that he will be
joining with the Auckland team next year.
Paul Schulz crowned the day by bringing in the home made segue that
Geoff Bennett and he have been developing. They had the goal of
walking into a hardware store and buying components and driving
out. At the end of the day Bill, our inflatable penguin was seen
cruising unsteadily off to new adventures. He had been busy all week
promoting the event.
Software Freedom Day at the Mawson Centre was a rich and enjoyable day.
Looking forward to next year. Janet Hawtin
